Official sourcesThe short answer
Three stages, one useful mainland hub
Travel by train to Formia-Gaeta, continue downhill to the port, then sail to Ponza or Ventotene. This route avoids taking a car onto the islands and works from both Rome and Naples.
Take a train to Formia-Gaeta
From Rome Termini: search for a direct Regionale, Regionale Veloce or Intercity service to Formia-Gaeta on the Rome–Naples coastal line. A direct journey commonly takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes.
From Napoli Centrale: direct regional and Intercity services also call at Formia-Gaeta. A direct journey commonly takes about 50 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes.
These are planning ranges, not a timetable. Search your date and train number on the official Trenitalia journey planner. Regional and Intercity tickets follow different conditions; Trenitalia explains the rules for travelling on regional trains.
Before leaving, also check RFI travel updates for engineering works or disruption. Leave a generous margin before the sailing: a delayed train and a missed ferry are separate journeys.

Formia-Gaeta railway station
The station sits above the town centre. The port is downhill towards the seafront.
Get from Formia station to the ferry port
The port can be reached on foot in approximately 10–15 minutes, depending on your pace, luggage and exact boarding pier. The route is mainly downhill on the way to the sea; remember that the return walk is uphill.
- Walk: practical with light luggage and enough time.
- Taxi: the simplest option with children, heavy suitcases or reduced mobility.
- Local bus: services and stops vary, so confirm the correct stop shortly before arrival.
Do not plan a tight train-to-ferry connection. You still need time to find the operator, ticket office and correct pier.

Before boarding
Allow time on the ground
- Confirm the ferry company and departure pier
- Respect the check-in time shown on your ticket
- Recheck weather and service notices
- Keep identity documents and tickets ready
Choose the ferry or fast service
Formia has scheduled sea connections to Ponza and Ventotene. The timetable changes considerably by season, day and weather conditions.
Ferry · nave
Usually around 2½ hours to Ponza. Vehicle transport is available only on eligible sailings and remains subject to island restrictions.
Fast service · unità veloce
Usually around 1 hour 20 minutes to Ponza. Passenger-only and more exposed to changes when sea conditions deteriorate.
Autumn 2026 · Ponza
28 September–24 October: the published daily ferry combination is Formia 08:00 and Ponza 17:45, useful for a day trip. 25 October–17 December: morning departures from Formia are 08:30 on Monday and 09:00 on other days; the published return is 14:30 Monday–Saturday and 15:30 Sunday, leaving much less time on the island.
Special-date exceptions are listed by Laziomar. Always recheck both directions before purchase.
Use the official Laziomar pages for current Formia–Ponza sailings and Formia–Ventotene sailings. The operator states that timetables may change without notice, the fast unit carries passengers only, and the ticket office opens one hour before each departure.
Parking before the ferry
For travellers arriving by car, the most clearly documented public option is the multi-storey car park at Formia-Gaeta station, Piazzale IV Novembre. It is above the town centre, so allow time to walk downhill to the port and uphill after your return.
The Municipality of Formia states that municipal parking has been free since 1 April 2026, until further notice. A separate municipal notice explicitly includes the station multi-storey car park. Road rules, reserved bays and on-site signs still apply.
Check the municipal parking notice and the station car park notice shortly before travel. Privately managed or guarded car parks may have separate prices and conditions; verify these directly rather than relying on an old online tariff.
Local planning
Small choices that protect your trip
Travelling with luggage
Allow extra time for the downhill walk and check luggage rules with your sea operator.
Wind and sea
Services can change or be cancelled. Check notices the day before and again on departure morning.
Day trip or overnight?
Compare arrival and return times, not just crossing duration. Reduced-season timetables may make a day trip impractical.
Taking a car
Vehicle access to the islands may be restricted. For a short stay, leaving the car in Formia is often simpler.
