Formia Beaches: Where to Swim
From the sandy seafront of Vindicio to Gianola and its Roman cove: a local guide to choosing the right beach for your day.
In short
Vindicio
Close to town, sandy, good for families and water sports.
Santo Janni
Long sandy shore with a gently sloping seabed: easy with children.
Gianola
Free stretches and beach clubs, plus coves inside the regional park.
The beach closest to town life
On the western side of Formia, towards Gaeta, Vindicio is a wide, mostly sandy beach alternating beach clubs and free stretches. It is popular for windsurfing, sailing and SUP.
The seabed is shallow in several places but not everywhere: with children choose the right access and follow the lifeguards. Summer weekend parking fills early.

Sand and shallow water for families
On the eastern side, between the town and Gianola, Santo Janni is a long sandy stretch with free beaches and clubs. The seabed usually slopes gently, making it one of the most practical choices with small children. Arrive in the morning for easier parking.
Sandy shore and wild coves
Gianola means two different things: a lively sandy shore with clubs, free stretches and seaside restaurants, and the natural promontory of the Gianola regional park, with small bays, pebbles, rocks and paths.
The Roman cove (Porticciolo Romano) is not a sandy beach: access is on rock and stone. Respect the protected-area rules.

Before you go
Municipal parking in Formia has been free since 1 April 2026 until further notice, but spaces near beach accesses fill fast on summer weekends. Check official bathing-water quality on ARPA Lazio.
